FUNCTIONAL YOGA,
DEMYSTIFIED.
WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL YOGA?
Movements and exercises are considered functional if they support and strengthen the movement patterns that our bodies rely on to get tasks done every day. Functional Yoga places value in:
Mobility over flexibility: Flexibility refers to how far we can move a joint. Unfortunately, being flexible enough to do the spits doesn’t make daily activities easier. That’s why we focus on Mobility. Mobility refers to the range of motion we can control through strength and coordination, which is way more helpful in our daily lives.
Non-repetitive movement: Our bodies aren’t designed to do the exact same thing all the time. That’s why we will explore movement patterns that are varied, nonlinear, and often made up of more than one muscle group. We don’t use our bodies in a linear way, our yoga practice shouldn’t either.
Functionality over aesthetics: I don’t look like the cover model for Yoga Journal. I bet you don’t either. Our bodies, and the experiences we’ve had in those bodies, should inform our practice! Functional Yoga celebrates these differences and empowers us to honor our own body instead of some arbitrary ideal. There’s no one way, shape, or alignment that works for everyone!
I”M SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE.
Hi. I’m Jack.
I’m here to support you through science-based movement, practical breathwork, and effective stress reduction techniques. My classes are welcoming, lighthearted, and rooted in sustainable practices that build long-term stability, both on and off the mat.
I am a Yoga Alliance certified Advanced Yoga Teacher and Continuing Education Provider with over 2,000 hours of specialized education in:
Anatomy/Physiology, Somatic Movement, Injury Management/Prevention, Myofascial Release, Advanced Pranayama, as well as Professional/Studio Development.
Meditation, Trauma Informed Yoga, Body Positivity, GLBTQIA+/BIPOC Inclusivity, and Yoga History/Philosophy.
After a traumatic assault in 2014 left me disabled, I struggled with pain, anxiety, and limited mobility. When traditional treatments proved unsuccessful, I turned to yoga. It didn’t just help me heal; it transformed my life.
Blending evidence-based techniques with my own lived experience of chronic pain, PTSD, and disability, I focus on creating solutions that are accessible and sustainable. My goal is to help my students not only understand the how but also the why behind every practice. I’ve shared my unique approach to yoga with students across the globe, in private trainings as well as at globally recognized retreat centers and schools.
I currently reside in Tacoma, Washington with my husband, our dog, and our two cats.
